Camp Pendleton Edson Range and Chappo Dining Halls serve Marine recruits and officers.
The Chappo Dining Facility serves over 2,200 meals per day in 500 seats while the Chappo Dining Facility has an enclosed outdoor area with six BBQ grills and 100 seats. Chappo also has the first drive thru window which offers an alternative to fast food options.
Both buildings are built to fit the local topography with guarded glass plains that maximize filtered daylight and highlight the views of the surrounding mountains and Pacific Ocean.
In partnership with Whiting-Turner, we developed multiple energy models to understand the solar impact on the building. Several features were implemented to minimize glare and maximize passive lighting, including deep overhangs, and integral curtain wall light shelves.
An on-site photovoltaic panel grid generates approximately 17% of annual energy requirements. We achieved LEED Gold Certification for both dining facilities.
